Whisky and Cigar Evening - 8 August 2012
We are well known for our wine and food evenings, this evening gave us an unique opportunity to think outside the box.
We started the evening with five different soups, a variety of breads and pâtés that complimented the tasting, a real ‘wow’ effect. The open fires burning merrily ensured that the cold stayed outside.
The whisky tasting was based on the different whisky styles and processes and distillation methods, led by Whisky expert Handré Botha, who also gave us a brief history of whisky making.
We tasted the following:
1. Bain’s Cape Mountain Single grain whisky
2. Bells
3. Bells Special Reserve
4. Jameson 12 year old Special Reserve
5. The Glenlivet 12yr old
6. Laphroaig 10 year old
The aromas of all the different whiskies were an education in itself, and each whisky had an individual taste.
The cigar part of the evening was presented by Dr.Gerhard Stemmet –a local cigar aficionado and member of a cigar club in Cape Town. The cigar featured was a Cuban cigar The Montecristo Edmundo.
He told us the origin of cigar making and a history of cigars, we were then taken step by step through the correct method of cigar smoking and it was extremely interesting.
The whisky and cigar tasting was followed by a main course and dessert, and was concluded with a final puff of the cigars and a dram of whisky
The evening was a resounding success and was fully booked, and although this was the first time that this event was held, it will definitely become a yearly institution at De Oude Kraal.
Thank you to all our guests that attended.
