Bird Watching
Judge Howie compiled a bird list numbering one hundred and sixteen birds at De Oude Kraal during his tenure as judge of the Appeals Court. We are privileged to have Black headed herons making nests in our blue gum trees in summer.
Hiking Trials
The extensive 2400 Ha farm has a variety of hiking trails available. You can explore the trails
or climb the numerous 'koppies' on the farm.
Guests can explore the flora of the Free State grasslands, and see the rare wild olive trees, which are the only ones of its kind in the Free State.
You may bring your own walking gear or we can provide walking sticks. Binoculars are essential for spotting Game in the distance.
Historic remains to explore -For the amateur archeologist evidence of pre-'Groot Trek' graves can be found as well as remnants of a few Koi tribe kraal shelters scattered across the farm.
Swimming Pool
The swimming pool at this Bloemfontein accommodation is set in the lush green garden of De Oude Kraal; it offers the perfect place for a tan. For the book lovers, you may borrow a book from our library and just relax while reading and enjoying a delicious cocktail.
Sun downer Drive
Our sun downer drive departs every afternoon. All overnight guests at the Bloemfontein accommodation can enjoy this
complimentary drive and experience the typical Southern Free State grass fields, red grass, small “koppies”, fresh air and spectacular sunsets.
Be on the lookout for tortoises, Meerkat, Eland, Blesbuck, Springbuck and Black Wildebeest.
Tennis Court
The tennis court is available for all overnight guests of the Bloemfontein accommodation. Rackets are available at reception.
Horse Riding
Explore the Free State farmlands by horseback. Our horses are very gentle and ideal for novice or experienced riders.
Guests are required to book four hours in advance, as the horses are moving freely on the farm. We offer Guides at an additional fee.
Picnic in the Garden
Guests may order a picnic basket for the family or just a picnic for two.
Picnic Baskets:
- Needs to be ordered in advanced, as all food is freshly prepared.
- You can choose the content of the picnic basket, or we may suggest a menu.
- The Picnic basket’s price will vary according to the order.

Romantic Picnic Dinner - If you would like to dine with us, but fancy a private romantic picnic rather than dining at a table, you are welcome to order a picnic basket.
No Private Baskets - We are an exclusive country estate and reserve our private gardens for guest that order from our restaurant or stays with us.

If you think fixed target shooting is too easy for you, or you would like to shoot with a more powerful gun than a .22, we can arrange for a Clay Pigeon Shooting.

Eco 4 X 4 Trail
Come and drive your own 4 X 4 on our challenging trails. For more information on this activity please enquire at reception.
Hot-Air Ballooning
- Lift up at dawn and experience the patchwork quilt of the Free State country side from a bird’s eye view.
- The maximum amount of passengers allowed is eight per Hot Air balloon.
- Booking is essential as we need to arrange for the balloonist and balloon.
- Hot Air Ballooning is subject to weather as the ballooning relies on the weather of the day.

Star Gazing
The dark and crispy clear air, away from the hindrance of city lights, is ideal for star gazing as it brings out a treasure trove of deep sky objects. Even the faintest of the small southern sky constellation can be seen clearly.
